The theme for the 2010-2011 school year was "Together we can..." The Reflections National Arts Competition was held, and the following students will be moving on to the WCPSS PTSA: Visual Arts: Moomna Arshad, Jessi Nelson and Mimi Shim : PLACED FIRST IN THE DISTRICT LEVEL COMPETITION AND WILL MOVE ON TO STATES Photography: Hannah Eadie and Rachel Krauza Literature: Andrew Fessler, Kristen Johnson and Samantha Santana Film Production: Ambar Catalan and Canyon Dell'Omo : PLACED FIRST IN THE DISTRICT LEVEL COMPETITION AND WILL MOVE ON TO STATES Musical Composition: Chris Sefton and Myles Travitz **Congratulations** ~To Catherine Kennedy Garrett, a Panther Creek junior who is the winner of a National Gold Medal in The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S. and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers. This year's program had 185,000 submissions, from which only 1,500 teens were selected for national medals by professionals in the arts. Of the winners, only three other North Carolina students were selected as gold medalists. Catherine's submission is a photograph entitled Tender Bones. Paula Hansen is her visual arts teacher at Panther Creek. Catherine and other national medalists are invited to the national celebration in New York City May 31-June 1, where winning students will be recognized at world-famous Carnegie Hall. On June 1, winners will have the opportunity to meet with professional artists, and the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers will showcase award-winning works at the ART.WRITE.NOW National Exhibition. Congratulations, Catherine! ~To Myles Travitz, a senior at PCHS, who was named the Raleigh Arts Commission's Artist of Tomorrow in the field of music. He and four other high school seniors who placed in the remaining categories of Dance, Theatre/Musical Theatre, Literature, and Visual Arts will be honored at an event on March 23rd at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium. Each student will receive a one-time college scholarship.
